Emergency Tax Refund Calculator

On an emergency tax code? Estimate how much you have overpaid and could claim back — enter your salary, code and how long you have been on it.

Estimate only; your actual refund depends on your payslips. Not tax advice.

Quick answer

On an emergency BR or 0T code you get no tax-free Personal Allowance, so you are over-taxed by roughly £209 a month (20% of the £1,048 monthly allowance). Over three months that is about £630, which you can reclaim from HMRC — unless your allowance is being used on another job.

Questions

How much emergency tax will I get back?+
On a BR or 0T emergency code you get no tax-free allowance, so you are over-taxed by roughly £209 a month (20% of the £1,048 monthly Personal Allowance). Over three months that is about £630, which you can reclaim from HMRC — unless your allowance is used on another job.
How long does emergency tax last?+
Usually only until HMRC receives your correct details — often one or two pay periods after you give your employer a P45 or complete the starter checklist. Any tax overpaid in the meantime is reclaimable.
How do I claim emergency tax back?+
Give your employer your P45 or complete the new-starter checklist so the right code is applied; overpaid tax then usually comes back through payroll. If the tax year has ended, claim it via your Personal Tax Account or a P800, going back up to four years.
